Mitacs Elevate is now accepting proposal submissions for two years of postdoc funding valued at $60,000/year plus extensive customized professional development training ($7,500/year non-cash value).  A minimum stipend/salary of $55,000 per year is allocated to the fellow and up to $5,000 is allocated to research costs.  Partner organizations must provide a minimum of $30,000/year.

UPEI application process:
1) Complete the application using the Mitacs Portal.  Details on how to apply can be found on the Mitacs website here.
2) The supervisor must submit the application and supporting documents for UPEI approval using the Researcher Portal and selecting the "Research Funding Administrative Approvals Form for GRANT Applications (rev Dec 2020)".  Instructions for using the Researcher Portal can be found here.  Applicants are requested to submit by June 23, 2021, ensuring that the application is received by Research Services by June 25, 2021.  
Ensure that the complete application, including the Office of Research Services Approval form, is uploaded to the Researcher Portal.  The supervisor is responsible for obtaining approvals from each university for which there is an academic supervisor on the project.
3) Upon receipt of UPEI approvals, the signed Office of Research Services Approval form will be provided to the supervisor by email and the application may then be submitted in the Mitacs Portal.  The deadline for submission is June 30, 2021.

Background

 

Atlantic Canada has the highest incidence of cancer (per 100,000 people) in Canada. The Canadian Cancer Society launched a campaign in 2020 to raise $20 million for prevention, support and research programs in this region.

This grant funding opportunity is supported by the J.D. Irving, Limited — Excellence in Cancer Research Fund. In addition to operating grants, the Fund will also support trainees enrolled in the Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute’s (BHCRI) Cancer Research Training Program (CRTP). More than 250 trainees have taken part in CRTP over the last 20 years and the majority of graduates have gone on to have successful careers in science and medicine in Canada and abroad. Applicants are encouraged to learn more about the CRTP on BHCRI’s website.

This combined investment by the J.D. Irving, Limited — Excellence in Cancer Research Fund will build capacity in cancer research across Atlantic Canada and train the next generation of cancer researchers, creating a continuous pipeline of emerging talent and promoting local discoveries in cancer research that will have far reaching benefits.

Program description

The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is issuing this special Atlantic Canada call for operating grant applications focused on cancer research. Applications are encouraged from all areas of cancer research (e.g. biomedical, clinical, health services, and (psycho)social, cultural, environmental and population health research).

Principal Investigators must hold a firm academic position at a Canadian university in one of the Atlantic Provinces: New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, or Prince Edward Island. All research funds administered through this competition must remain within Atlantic Canada.

CCS is committed to equity, diversity and inclusivity and strives to promote inclusive excellence in its research programs. We welcome eligible applicants of diverse backgrounds to apply for our funding opportunities.

Funds available

The full funding envelope for the Atlantic Cancer Research Grant competition is currently $2.1M. Additional donations to the J.D. Irving, Limited — Excellence in Cancer Research Fund may increase the funding envelope.

Applications for up to $100,000 per year for 3 years will be accepted. Therefore, it is anticipated that at least 7 grants will be awarded in this competition. Successful applications must fall within the fundable range for CCS awards (>3.5). These grants are non-renewable.

Funding will be provided to support the direct costs of research, including supplies, eligible salaries, and equipment associated with the proposed work. Equipment requests cannot exceed 15% of the requested budget. Indirect costs are not eligible. Please consult our grant expense policies when creating your budget.

Peer review

Two peer review committees will be assembled to review the full applications: biomedical/clinical and health services/(psycho)social, cultural, environmental and population health research. The peer review committees will be composed of diverse (gender, geography, career stage, race) scientists with expertise relevant to the submitted applications, and patient/survivor/caregiver representatives who will evaluate the relevance of the applications to cancer and those affected by it.

Review criteria

The review criteria for the full application will include four main assessment categories: Research Strategy, Investigator(s), Environment, and Relevance.

Research strategy

  • scientific merit and convincing rationale that considers critical review and analysis of preliminary data and/or published literature, as appropriate
  • feasibility of the project, including identification of potential problems and how they will be addressed, including alternative approaches
  • sex, gender, and other identity factors (e.g. race, ethnicity) and their intersectionalities considered in the research design, methods, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of findings
  • appropriateness of the term and amount of support requested

Investigator(s)

  • the qualifications and appropriate expertise of the investigator(s)
  • consideration of equity, diversity and inclusion principles in team composition and recruitment processes, and training and development opportunities

Environment

  • quality of the research environment in which the work will take place (is there appropriate equipment, mentorship, etc. available to support success?)

Relevance

  • potential impact of the project on cancer, and those affected by it
 

Additional Requirements

In addition to the usual requirements for scientific and financial reporting, funder acknowledgement, Canadian Cancer Society policies on open access and tobacco related funding, applicants are also advised that J.D. Irving, Limited expects that funded researchers will be open to sharing updates on their progress throughout the term of the grant, through written, verbal, and other forms of communication (for example, video presentations).

Multiple applications/multiple sources of funding

It is understood that applications may also be made to other agencies to provide support for grants/programs similar to those submitted to the Canadian Cancer Society. For this competition, duplicate applications submitted to other agencies will be accepted, but budgetary overlap will not be permitted at the funding stage.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) are pleased to launch a special $2.25 million funding opportunity to support activities that promote vaccine confidence in Canada. The agencies expect these activities will improve public understanding of vaccines and help Canadians to make evidence-based decisions, especially among populations that are hesitant about vaccines.

The new funding is targeted at Canadian non-profit organizations, non-federal museums and science centres, and academic institutions with a strong track record of science and/or health promotion. Researchers from all fields with an expertise in combating vaccine-related misinformation may apply either individually through their institutions or in collaboration with science, social sciences, humanities, and/or health promotion organizations.

Funding Information

Grants have a value of up to $50,000 and are to be used over a one-year period.

 
You can use the grant to cover operational costs, such as staff and personnel salaries, materials, supplies or translation, as long as they are essential to the delivery of activities supported by the grant. Meals, travel and accommodation for participants in the activity are also an eligible expense, where or when circumstances allow. Items such as tobacco and gifts to Elders are also eligible, as honoraria.  You may not use the grant to support research, however.

NSERC will host information webinars to discuss the funding opportunity’s goals and selection criteria, how to prepare an application, and to answer questions. Interested applicants can attend the French session on March 8, 2021 at 2:30 PM (Atlantic Time) and/or the English session on March 9, 2021 at 1:30 PM (Atlantic Time).

This funding opportunity is part of Government of Canada's continued response to address the health challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
 
As the pandemic has evolved, so have the research needs of decision makers. There are important research gaps in Canada’s response that have become evident; gaps that need to be addressed rapidly and in a sustained manner to respond effectively to the pandemic. In order to achieve its goals, the Government of Canada will launch several funding opportunities under the “Emerging COVID-19 Research Gaps and Priorities” banner to address the identified research gaps in Canada. As priority gap areas are identified, additional funding opportunities will be launched. The purpose of this and upcoming funding opportunities is to provide rapid funding for projects which respond to identified gaps in COVID-19 research areas.
 

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to:

  • Accelerate the availability and use of high-quality and real-time evidence and/or solutions to support Canada’s ongoing response to the pandemic in order to better prevent, detect, treat and manage COVID-19; and
  • Generate evidence related to one or more diverse population(s), including for instance: health equity considerations, health status (e.g. high risk populations, individuals with comorbid conditions), sex and gender, a life cycle approach (from children to aging adults), and/or racialized or First Nations, Inuit, Metis and Urban Indigenous populations.
Please note that to be eligible to the competition applications must address both objectives AND respond to at least one (1) of the fifteen (15) subtopics under the six (6) research areas as indicated here.

Introduction to High Performance Computing (HPC) with ACENET & Compute Canada

This is a beginner session. Researchers across many disciplines use HPC to tackle analyses that would be either inefficient or impossible on a desktop. This session offers: a basic description of the infrastructure and support accessible through Compute Canada and ACENET, with entry-level advice about how to begin; an overview of the software packages available through Compute Canada and ACENET for applications, data analysis, and software development, and how to request specific software relevant to your work; and insight into the potential of parallel computing to accelerate your analysis.

To access and use the ACENET and Compute Canada HPC clusters from your desktop, you will use a text-based "command line" interface. This workshop is designed for either new HPC users, or for experienced users either transitioning to Slurm or seeking to improve efficiency with the scheduler. Compute Canada’s national systems use a job scheduler called “Slurm”. In this session you will learn how Slurm works and how it allocates jobs, helping you to: minimize wait time by framing reasonable requests; ask for only the resources you need, to improve efficiency; increase throughput; run more jobs simultaneously; and troubleshoot and address crashes. Prerequisites: Completion of Introduction to Linux and Introduction to Shell Scripting, or prior experience with both.

ACENET and Ocean Tracking Network: Introductory Python for Ecologists

Join ACENET and 
Ocean Tracking Network (OTN) in our Introductory Python for Ecologists workshop series. Over three weeks, we will explore data analysis and visualization with Python, based on the Data Carpentry Lessons. Each week will build off the previous one – if you miss a week, check out the previous link to follow along! No prior coding experience necessary. We will start with basic Python syntax and the Jupyter notebook interface. Then, we’ll teach you how to import CSV files using the Pandas package to manipulate and summarize data frames, and cover a brief introduction to plotting. The last lesson will demonstrate how to work with databases directly from Python. C as a Second Language

This workshop will be a hands-on introduction to the C programming language. A great deal of high-performance computing software is written in C, but few universities offer courses in the language any more. If you have to work with "legacy code" written in C, adding features, porting to a new machine, or patching errors, or if you need to write user-defined functions for engineering packages such as Fluent, then this workshop is for you. Participants must be familiar with another programming language.  DETAILS & REGISTER

C++ as a Second Language

This workshop will be a hands-on introduction to the C++ programming language building off the previous workshop's introduction to C. Participants must have taken "C as a Second Language" or have had prior experience with C programming. A great deal of high-performance computing software is written in C++, but few universities offer courses in the language any more. If you have to work with "legacy code" written in C++, adding features, porting to a new machine, or patching errors, or if you need to extend packages like OpenFOAM which are written in C++, then this workshop is for you. C++ was designed as an extension of the C language but has its own distinct idiom or style. Modern Fortran for Scientific Programming

This workshop will be a hands-on introduction to the FORTRAN programming language. FORTRAN, one of the initial high-level programming languages, continues to be an excellent option for high-performance computing due to its superb performance. The newer versions of FORTRAN offer many modern features, including object-oriented programming capabilities to programmers. This course will cover some of these features. Molecular Dynamics Workshop
6, 13, 20 and 27 April, 1:30-3:30pm Atlantic 
This workshop is designed to be a practical introduction to the method of molecular dynamics simulations. It is intended for students with no prior knowledge. Students will be guided to using various structure prediction software to model missing protein and RNA segments, AMBER and NAMD software for performing simulations of biomolecular systems, VMD for visualizing trajectories and manipulating PDB files, and Python for analyzing and plotting simulation data. The workshop will be conducted in four two-hour hands-on sessions over two weeks, consisting of molecular dynamics basics, visual molecular dynamics, building complex simulation systems and molecular dynamics simulation and analysis.   DETAILS & REGISTER

New HSS Support Forum - Tools of the Trade!


Join Lydia Vermeyden, our Research Consultant in Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences, and a guest speaker for a lunchtime series on the last Friday of each month starting 26 February. This series, by researchers for researchers, is focused on discussions, demonstrations and applications of digital research tools in humanities, arts and the social sciences. Each session will include a 20-30 minute presentation, followed by 30 minutes for questions and discussion. Sessions scheduled so far include Voyant Tools for Text Analysis (Laura Estill), Making Song Collections Accessible (Heather Sparling) and Cloud and ArcGIS (Josh Macfadyen).

PEI Climate Challenge Fund

In 2020, the Government of Prince Edward Island established a $1-million annual Climate Challenge Fund (CC Fund). The CC Fund is intended to generate the best innovative solutions to respond to the threat of climate change by students, experts, communities and businesses.  

The fund will accept applications from Island businesses, municipalities, academic institutions, non-profit organizations, organizations representing culturally diverse communities, service providing agencies, services for diverse groups, organizations and groups, and not-for-profit organizations doing projects in Prince Edward Island.

Specifically, the fund will support projects that:
• help adapt to projected impacts of climate change;
• reduce greenhouse gas emissions;
• increase opportunities for carbon sequestration;
• support public outreach and education; and
• expand research and knowledge.

CC Fund contributions will be limited to a maximum of $100,000 per project, or $100,000 per applicant/year for applicants with multiple projects, unless otherwise approved by the Climate Challenge Working Group.

For academic institutions, the CC Fund will contribute funding of 70% of eligible expenditures. Successful applicants may use in-kind resources, or other Federal or Provincial funds as their share of the costs, subject to the stacking rules or policies inherent to other programs.  

Overhead costs must be included in the budget at a rate of five per cent of the total funding request.  

Applications submitted by November 30, 2020 will be considered in the first round of approvals for 2020-21 funding, but applications can be submitted anytime on an ongoing basis.

UPEI Submission Process:

UPEI may submit multiple applications; however, program guidelines require departments to assign a priority rating to each individual project.  Therefore, applicants must communicate with their Chair (or Dean for non-departmentalized faculties) before preparing an application.  

Applicants intending to meet the November 30th deadline must ensure that their application is submitted for approval in the UPEI Researcher Portal by November 23rd, and ensure that it reaches Research Services for review by November 25th.

Egg Farmers of Canada (EFC) is proud to support Canadian research in egg production, poultry science, animal and human nutrition, and economic and environmental sustainability at universities across the country. EFC’s call for letters of intent is now open, and researchers are invited to complete and submit the funding application form. For this call, EFC has identified nine research priorities with a specific emphasis on environment and sustainability and end of flock management.
