You are invited to come out and see research that undergraduate and graduate students are doing at UPEI. The Undergraduate Research Days will be held on October 11 and 12 in the H. Alex MacKinnon Auditorium (Room 242), Don and Marion McDougall Hall starting at 9 am on both days. The Graduate Research Conference will be held on October 13 and 14, also in H. Alex MacKinnon Auditorium (Room 242), Don and Marion McDougall Hall starting at 9 am daily.  

Please come out and support and encourage research at UPEI.

Please see information below regarding two studentship calls offered by Mental Health Research Canada and Mitacs: Summer 2023 Mental Health Impact Studentships & Indigenous Mental Health Impact Studentships for Truth & Reconciliation.
 

Summer 2023 Mental Health Impact Studentships 

Mitacs and Mental Health Research Canada have partnered on this funding opportunity for Canadian university & college students across the country to work on a mental health research project with their academic supervisor and community partner. 

The successful applicant will be awarded $15,000 for a four- or six-month term; funds will be paid directly to the student’s academic institution and held by the student’s supervisor. The project would begin in May 2023.  

 

Eligible students must: 

  1. A Canadian citizen and/or permanent resident; 
  2. Be enrolled in a Masters, College or PhD program at an accredited Canadian University or College with a background in psychology or related field; 
  3. Be seeking to conduct a mental health research project in collaboration with both an academic supervisor and an eligible community partner. Preference will be given to projects addressing the unique needs of diverse and/or vulnerable populations in Canada

Applications to the Mitacs-MHRC partnership is a 2-stage process: Preliminary application to MHRC, then formal Mitacs Accelerate application. 

Stage 1 deadline: November 4, 2022 

Stage 1 applications do not need to be routed through Research Services for approval. However, potential applicants should reach out to the Office of Commercialization, Industry, and Innovation (Marc Richard – mrichard@upei.ca) to confirm intent to apply and for assistance verifying the eligibility of the partner organization (applicant must confirm partner’s eligibility with Mitacs by October 14).  

Stage 2: 

Successful eligible applicants from Stage 1 will be invited to submit a Mitacs Accelerate application no later than December 15, 2022.  

 

Deadline for receipt of Stage 2 applications by Research Services: December 12, 2022 

 

Indigenous Mental Health Impact Studentships for Truth & Reconciliation 

Mitacs and Mental Health Research Canada have partnered on this funding opportunity for Indigenous university students across the country to work with their academic supervisor and partner with a local service provider or Indigenous community organization. 

The successful applicant will be awarded $15,000 for a four- or six-month term; funds will be paid directly to the student’s academic institution and held by the student’s supervisor. The project would begin in May 2023. 

Eligible students must: 

  1. Identify as First Nations, Inuit or Metis 
  2. Be enrolled in a Undergraduate, Masters, College or PhD program at an accredited Canadian University or College, with a background in psychology or related field/discipline AND; 
  3. Be seeking to conduct a research project within the theme of Indigenous mental health

SSHRC Deadline extensions (Atlantic provinces) for Insight Grants and Gender-Based Violence Research Initiative

SSHRC is aware of the impact Hurricane Fiona has had on researchers and postsecondary institutions in Atlantic Canada. Due to the widespread damage, power-outages, and disruptions, SSHRC has extended the Insight Grants funding opportunity deadline to October 17, 2022, at 8:00 p.m. eastern and the Gender-Based Violence Research Initiative deadline to October 20, 2022, at 8:00 p.m. eastern for applicants submitting from post-secondary institutions in the Atlantic provinces. We hope that this two-week extension provides the necessary time for impacted researchers to submit their applications. Should any additional extension be required, applicants should contact insightgrants@sshrc-crsh.gc.ca for Insight Grants or partnerships@sshrc-crsh.gc.ca for the Gender-Based Violence Research Initiative, and requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The objective of the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s (CGS M) program is to help develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies. 

 

Program Overview 

  • The value of these scholarships is $17,500 for 12 months, non-renewable 
  • To be eligible to apply, you must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada or a Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) as of the application deadline date

*Indigenous Scholars Awards and Supplements Pilot Initiative* 

Offered by NSERC and SSHRC, this pilot initiative will provide, to the limit of available funding, a $5,000 supplement to qualifying Indigenous CGS M award holders, and provide a $17,500 award and a $5,000 supplement to qualifying Indigenous candidates who are on the waitlist (i.e., alternate candidates) for the CGS M program. Applicants will apply via the CGS M program, and must: 

  • be eligible to apply to the CGS M program; 
  • self-identify as Indigenous for the purposes of this initiative; 
  • provide a one-page (3,000 characters maximum) personal statement; and 
  • have had their application deemed meritorious in the CGS M review process.

  • you will apply for admission to an eligible program of study by the internal deadline set by the institution(s) indicated in your application 

 

Offers of awards will be made available in the Research Portal as of April 1, 2023

Matt will provide details on the Mitacs programs.  The in-person presentation will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2022, from 1:30 to 3 pm in AVC287N.  This session will interest researchers hoping to develop or expand partnerships with industry, not-for-profit, or other partners.

There is also time for one-on-one sessions with Matt to answer specific questions on Sept 15th.

Launch of New SSHRC-CMHC Joint Initiative: Research Partnership Grants to Assess Longitudinal Housing Outcomes

The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), in partnership with SSHRC, has launched the new Partnership Grants for National Housing Strategy Longitudinal Outcomes Research, to examine key issues affecting outcomes of investments in affordable housing.

CMHC aims to support multi-disciplinary research teams of social sciences and humanities researchers, life scientists, engineers, and environmental scientists to work collaboratively. They will examine the long-term health, socio-economic, and climate change outcomes of investments in affordable housing, and the links between housing, health, socio-economic, and environmental factors at the household and community levels.

CMHC wishes to invest up to $4.8M over five years to support two multidisciplinary and multisectoral research partnerships. SSHRC will administer the funding opportunity and will work with CIHR and NSERC to promote the funding opportunity to researchers in all fields.
