2022 NSERC PromoScience competition - Webinars

NSERC invites applications for initiatives that promote the natural sciences and engineering (NSE) to Canada’s young people, particularly to under-represented groups in NSE careers, including girls and Indigenous peoples.

PromoScience supports hands-on learning experiences for young students and their teachers. Grants may not be used to support research.

The maximum allowable request is $200,000/year for 3 years. NSERC will not fund 100% of the costs of a proposed activity. NSERC’s contribution is generally up to one-third of a program’s funding, but NSERC will allow more flexibility if justified for competition 2022 given the circumstances surrounding COVID-19.

Only one application may be submitted per department in a post-secondary institution per competition year.

UPEI Submission Process 2022:

Due to NSERC’s application limit, each department can submit only one application.

1) Applicants will submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) to their Chair (or Dean for non-departmentalized faculties) by Monday, August 8th. The LOI (limit one page) will contain the following:

List of names of the principal investigator and co-investigators (and their affiliation)
Title of the project
A description of the project that includes the following information:
- A description of the nature and goals of the program including the anticipated number of youth or teachers to be reached
- An overview of how the PromoScience funding would be spent and details on other sources of funding (confirmed and/or anticipated)
- A description of the relevant experience of the applicant and other team members in science or engineering promotion

2) Chairs/Deans will select the top LOI from their faculty (or, if appropriate, encourage a collaborative application among interested applicants) and inform Research Services of the selected principal applicant from their department by Friday, August 26th. Chairs/Deans should consult with Research Services regarding any questions about the eligibility of proposed applications.

3) Selected applicants will prepare their application following NSERC's application process and must submit the application using the UPEI Romeo Researcher Portal for internal review and approval by September 8^th, ensuing that the application is received by Research Services by September 12th. Upon receipt of approval from Research Services, applicants must submit their application to NSERC electronically using NSERC’s ICSP Secure Submission Site.

Mitacs has recently signed an agreement with the Ministry of Science and Technology of Ukraine to enable a new collaboration on the Globalink Research Award (GRA) program that allows Canadian institutions to host Ukrainian interns.

Under the joint supervision of a home and host professor, successful senior undergraduate students, graduate students, as well as postdoctoral fellows will receive a $6,000 research award to conduct a 12- to 24-week research project.

Supervisors will be required to collect signatures from the Ukranian intern and supervising professor, then submit the application documents in the Romeo Researcher Portal for UPEI approvals using the Research GRANTS Approvals Form (rev Jan 2022).

Research Services will obtain institutional approval and return the signed application form to the supervisor for submission to Mitacs.

NSERC is taking action to assist the natural sciences and engineering (NSE) research communities in contributing to a more equitable, diverse and inclusive research enterprise, with the launch of the NSERC guide on integrating equity, diversity and inclusion considerations in research.

The new guide is designed to help NSE researchers apply a critical equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) lens in their work by providing guiding questions and examples relevant to their field of research.

It includes two main sections:

Guidance on embedding EDI considerations at each stage of the research process, including research questions, design of the study, methodology and data collection, analysis and interpretation and dissemination of results.
EDI considerations in building research teams, recruitment and retention, and the roles of team members throughout the course of a research project.

As part of its commitment to research excellence, NSERC recognizes that EDI are essential in creating the excellent, innovative and impactful research to advance knowledge and respond to local, national and global challenges. In order to achieve world-class research, all members of the research community must contribute to address systemic barriers that limit the full participation of all talented individuals.

Review the Discovery Grants program description before applying.

Notification of Intent to Apply Stage

Applicants must submit a Notification of Intent to Apply to NSERC in the Research Portal by August 2. Applicants are not required to submit the NOI to Research Services in advance for review and signature. However, applicants may request feedback on their NOI (optional) if submitted sufficiently before the deadline.

Applicants may submit a draft copy of their application for internal review (clarity, completeness, adherence to guidelines, etc.) by October 17.

Application submission process

1) Complete the application using the Research Portal.

2) Generate a PDF of the application and submit it for UPEI approval using the Romeo Researcher Portal by October 25, ensuring that Research Services will receive the application by October 27.

3) Upon receipt of UPEI approvals, you will be notified to proceed with submitting your application in the Research Portal by October 31. NSERC’s deadline for submission is November 1.

2) Internal peer review process

Research Services coordinates an optional internal peer pre-review process for the Discovery Grant competition. The process will be as follows:

1) Applicants will notify Leslie Cudmore at lcudmore@upei.ca of their intent to participate in the peer-review process by August 2. This will enable the selection of the most appropriate peer reviewer.

2) Applicants will submit a draft of their application (proposal with attachments, budget and CV) by September 1 to lcudmore@upei.ca. These documents will be sent to the selected peer reviewer for review & feedback.

3) Feedback will be returned by early October to provide the applicant with time to implement the suggestions before the application deadline.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Applicants are expected to increase the inclusion and advancement of underrepresented groups in the natural sciences and engineering to enhance excellence in research and training. Frequently asked questions:

1. Can applicants who hold a Discovery Grant or are applying for a Discovery Grant in Fall 2021 submit a LOI to Discovery Horizons?

Yes, researchers holding a Discovery grant or applying for one this year are eligible to apply to Discovery Horizons.

2. Can co-applicants be from non-NSE disciplines (Economics, Sociology …)

As long as the faculty members meet all eligibility requirements they can be from any departments. However, in the Discovery Horizons proposal, they must work towards advancing knowledge in the NSE.

3. Is the proposed work under Discovery Horizons expected to be drastically different from the work proposed for Discovery? Is conceptual overlap allowed as long as there is no budgetary overlap?

Discovery Horizons proposals should be different from Discovery Grants (applied for or held) since the Discovery Horizons applications, due to their broad level of interdisciplinarity with the social sciences or health research are not suitable for the DG program. At the full application stage, applications must indicate that the funds requested from the Discovery Horizons program will be for expenses that are distinct from those covered by support from other sources. For funding applied for, you must indicate that there will be no duplication of funding for the same expense(s) and explain how funds will be used if all applications are successful.

4. Does the application need to have all three components: (1) social sciences and humanities, (2) natural sciences and engineering, and (3) health and wellness?

No, Discovery Horizons applications must be rooted in the NSE and integrate elements from the social sciences and humanities and/or health and wellness.

5. How does the Discovery Horizons Program and the Tri-Agency Interdisciplinary Peer Review process differ from the interdisciplinary research funded under the New Frontiers in Research Fund?

Although the New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) was also created to fund interdisciplinary research in response to the Fundamental Science Review’s recommendations, it is focused on high-risk, high-reward, and fast-breaking research and supports research that proposes novel interdisciplinary approaches that bring together disciplines that do not traditionally work together. Please see the New Frontiers in Research Fund website for more details. Discovery Horizons, as well the other funding opportunities reviewed by the Tri-Agency Interdisciplinary Peer Review Committee will complement NFRF by focusing instead on investigator-initiated interdisciplinary research projects that are aligned with the core funding programs at each of the three major funding councils, including research projects that use existing interdisciplinary approaches.

6. Can I submit the same application to more than one of the funding opportunities participating in the Tri-Agency Interdisciplinary Peer Review Committee?

No, applicants may not identical or essentially identical applications to more than one funding opportunity participating in the pilot of the Tri-Agency Interdisciplinary Peer Review Committee, NSERC’s Discovery Horizons, SSHRC’s Insight Grants and CIHR’s Project Grants. In addition, all applications must meet the eligibility requirements and guidelines of the funding opportunity to which they apply, including those related to multiple applications. As a result, it is important to consult the funding opportunity’s webpage.

7. How do I determine which funding opportunity to apply in order to have my application reviewed by the Tri-Agency Interdisciplinary Peer Review Committee?

Applicants should apply to the agency funding opportunity that supports the dominant research area of the proposal.

8. Will interdisciplinary applications that fall entirely within the research areas of one agency be considered by the Tri-Agency Interdisciplinary Peer Review Committee?

No, applications that fall entirely within the research areas of one agency should be directed towards existing committees or evaluation groups, based on the practice and criteria of each agency. For example, interdisciplinary research solely within the natural sciences and engineering, with no social science, humanities, health, and/or wellness components should be directed towards another NSERC program, such as the Discovery Grants Program.
